Great work, Kenyon! I’m white and a longtime social justice agitator, and I hear you that the gay community doesn’t deal with it’s white privilege, among other things. But it’s that white privilege which lets the gay establishment fight for marriage over universal health care or sending our black and latino soldiers off to a war for oil. Until they come out for racial and economic justice, you can count me out of their ranks, even tho my family and I would technically benefit from glbt civil rights.

This post gives me a lot to think about. I agreed with a lot of what you’ve said and I also disagreed with a very few things that you’ve said. I agree about the representation of black families. Somehow though, I felt that you were implying that all black families should have been allowed to keep their children – because they were good families – with bad representation. Truthfully, black children have been murdered in black families just like other children of different ethnicities in their families. Being a child is quite unsafe in loads of families – and unfortunately, that does include some black ones. My idea is that children should be protected at all cost. After they’ve been killed is usually too late to think about it. But overall, I agreed with you whole heartedly about black representation.

I’m a black lesbian from Atlanta who currently lives in London England. I live here because I was granted the right (same as heterosexuals) to be with my partner – who is English. My partner cannot live in the USA because we have nothing that acknowledges or makes relationships legal. In this case, I think gay marriage goes far beyond the black and white issue, even though it is played out that way in the USA.
