Speaking up to white gay people is one thing. Speaking up to homophobic straight black people requires a different level of courage that few black gay men have demonstrated so far. I feel that this is what big-name tax-shelter foundations and 501(c)3 status seems to do to non-profits as well. Government $ to churches neutralizes the threat they could pose to power.
