More Down Low TV: Wendell Pierce To Play Closeted Character in New Movie

Jesus, take the wheel!: It seems like yet another “down-low” story is about to hit the big screen.

Wendell Pierce, who recently starred as the trumpeter trombone player down on his luck in the HBO series Treme, will be starring in a upcoming movie called Four, playing a closeted man who meets a a 16-year old white boy on the internet. I just can’t. From the film’s website.

On the 4th of July in Hartford, CT, June, a 16-year-old white boy, meets up with Joe, a closeted, married black man he met on the Internet. On the same night, in the same city, the black man’s 16-year-old daughter Abigayle, agrees to go out with Dexter, a white 20-year-old low-level drug dealer. In and around the city, on the American night of Independence, these 2 couples get to know each other, moving from strangers to intimates. In lonely landscapes of movie theaters, fast food restaurants, darkened churches and public parks, they discover the limits of desire and the possibilities of transcendence. Four juxtaposes the relationships of the 2 couples struggling with their desires and demons.

So both father and daughter are having some kind of longing (from what I can tell from what I’ve read of the stage play reviews online) that seems to stem from a Black wife/mother who is never seen in the play, whom is ailing and taken to bed, seemingly from depression or some unknown psychosomatic ailment. So not only is this a creepy down-low story, both father and daughter seem to be escaping the black mother figure, and running to white men for escape. It sounds like Monster’s Ball meets…something else equally tacky.

According to the Black Hollywood newsite Shadow and Act, the film is an adaptation of the play of the same name, written by white playwright Christopher Shinn in 1998. I haven’t read the play in fairness, but it does make one wonder why this film and this depiction is getting any kind of backing. Think about it-it’s been three years since Noah’s Arc: Jumpin the Broom was released-and it was the last film (that I know of) released featured black gay men who weren’t tragic, creepy or some homophobic punchline (see: Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married, Too).

What’s Good on the Economy

So I have a subscription to American Prospect-the progressive DC economic policy magazine that’s very much in the political line of Center for American Progress, Demos, and the like. Now, I’m not that kind of liberal, and often disagree with the prescriptions for American fiscal and economic policy-but I do feel like the reporting is solid, and gives me the kind of useful grounding on economic issues that I need-especially if you’re not an economist-and it’s very accessible.

The current issue I find particularly useful in understanding how this “jobless recovery” has actually made corporations even richer. Even if you don’t subscribe (you can have a print version sent to you or just subscribe online) there are a lot of free articles on the website. Check ‘em out. www.prospect.org

Groups Challenge Disparate Punishment Under Louisiana’s Crime Against Nature Law

Groups Challenge Disparate Punishment Under Louisiana’s Crime Against Nature Law

People Convicted Under Archaic Statute Forced to Register as Sex Offenders for 15 Years to Life

February 16, 2011 – Today, attorneys filed a federal civil rights suit in New Orleans on behalf of nine anonymous plaintiffs convicted under Louisiana’s Crime Against Nature law and forced to register as sex offenders as a result. The case challenges the continuing use of Louisiana’s 206 year-old Crime Against Nature statute to brand people who solicit oral and anal sex as sex offenders, while a conviction under Louisiana’s prostitution statute triggers no such requirement. The case was brought by the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR), Andrea J. Ritchie, Esq., and the Stuart H. Smith Law Clinic of Loyola University New Orleans College of Law in the United States District Court Eastern District of Louisiana in New Orleans. The groups held a press conference with allied organizations at the New Orleans federal courthouse and a telephone press briefing this morning.

Said CCR Attorney Alexis Agathocleous, A Crime Against Nature by Solicitation conviction involves acts that are historically associated with homosexuality and gets you branded as a sex offender simply because of disapproval of those acts. This archaic law is being used to mark people with a modern-day scarlet letter without any justification. Our clients pose no threat to anyone. None of them has ever been convicted of a sex offense involving children, violence, or force. Their inclusion on the sex offender registry violates basic constitutional equal protection principles and constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.”

In Louisiana, people accused of soliciting sex for a fee can be criminally charged in two ways: either under the prostitution statute, or under the solicitation provision of the Crime Against Nature statute. This statute, adopted in 1805, outlaws “unnatural carnal copulation,” which has been defined by Louisiana courts as oral and anal (but not vaginal) sex – sex acts historically associated with homosexuality. A prostitution conviction is a misdemeanor, but a Crime Against Nature conviction subjects people to far harsher penalties. Most significantly, individuals convicted of a Crime Against Nature are forced to register as sex offenders for 15 years. Multiple convictions require them to register for life.

Said co-counsel Andrea Ritchie, co-author of the just-published book, Queer Injustice: The Criminalization of LGBT People in the United States, “Police and prosecutors have complete discretion and are given no guidance whatsoever as to when and who to charge with a Crime Against Nature, and when and who to charge with prostitution. This leaves the door wide open to discriminatory enforcement targeting poor Black women, transgender women, and gay men for a charge that carries much harsher penalties. That decision can change the entire course of a person’s life.” Added Ritchie, “The trend around the country is to recognize and address the high levels of violence and poverty experienced by people in the sex industry. This law runs completely counter to that trend and further victimizes people, rather than providing them with much-needed services.”

Seventy-five percent of the people registered as a sex offender as a result of a Crime Against Nature conviction are women, and 80 percent of them are African American. They all must carry a state driver’s license or non-driver’s identification document emblazoned with the words SEX OFFENDER in bright orange capital letters. They must disclose the fact that they are registered as a sex offender to neighbors, landlords, employers, schools, parks, community centers, and churches. Their names, addresses, and photographs appear on the internet. They are required to mail postcards notifying every person in their neighborhood.

Said one plaintiff, “When you mail those cards it’s so humiliating, people kill you for that. I fear for my safety.”

The plaintiffs in the case chose to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation.

Said a mother of three who was convicted under the statute in the 90’s, “Because my picture and address are up on the internet with my charge, a guy once came by my house looking for sex.”

Many of the plaintiffs have been unable to secure work or housing as a result of their registration as sex offenders. Several have been barred from homeless shelters. One had rocks thrown at her by neighbors. And another has been refused residential substance abuse treatment because providers will not accept sex offenders at their facilities.

Said Deon Haywood, Executive Director of the New Orleans-based organization, Women With a Vision, “I work with the people directly affected by this statute every day: the toll it takes is devastating. Many of these women are survivors of rape and domestic violence themselves, many have struggled with addiction and poverty, yet they are being treated as predators. What this law does is completely disconnect them from our community and from what remains of a social safety net, making it impossible for them to recognize and develop their goals and dreams.”

Said co-counsel Prof. Davida Finger of Loyola University New Orleans College of Law, “This case is so important for Louisiana—we’re out of step with the rest of the country and it’s time to end this practice that has such terrible consequences.”

The nine plaintiffs in the case are not alone. Almost 40 percent of registered sex offenders in Orleans Parish are on the registry solely as a result of a conviction of Crime Against Nature by Solicitation. The lawsuit argues that being forced to register as a sex offender because of a Crime Against Nature conviction – the only offense requiring registration that includes no element of force, coercion, lack of consent, use of a weapon, or the involvement of a minor – serves no legitimate purpose. As such, say attorneys, it is unjustifiable and unconstitutional.

Non-Shock of the Week: Watching Fox News Makes You More Likely to Distrust Muslims

In un-shocking news of the week, the Public Religion Research Institute just released a report about American attitudes about Muslims, and also showed “a significant correlation between trust in Fox News and negative attitudes about Muslims.” They go onto say that:

  • Republicans who say Fox News is their most trusted news source are more likely than Republicans who trust a different news source to say they are well-informed about Islam (53% to 34%). They are also more likely than Republicans who most trust other news sources to say the hearings are a good thing (82% to 60%).
  • White evangelicals who most trust Fox News are much more likely than those who trust a different news source to say they feel informed about Islam than those who trust other sources of news (70% to 37%). This same group of evangelicals is also more likely than their counterparts who most trust other news sources to say the hearings are a good thing (84% to 60%).

Are you shocked? I’m not…

Guest Blog: Gimme a head with HAIR. LONG BEAUTIFUL HAIR

Gimme a head with HAIR. LONG BEAUTIFUL HAIR

by Brontez Purnell

It started for economic reasons. I was spending 120 dollars a month trying to keep together my”tight fade” alongside the illusion (i.e. absolute fucking lie) that clean cut people in general give- responsible, sanitized, youthful, and Puritan. Dude. Fuck that. People smiled at me everywhere and my baby bare face-thought i was younger than i was and for some MISGUIDED reason young people get clout cause people want to fuck them. I personally dont trust anyone under 30, but i digress. I also i rocked Wayfaires at the time and got called Urkel so much i actually started to belive it. I started dressing like a total dweeb and laid in bed at night HOPING WISHING and WAITING for Laura to love me back. I looked for a Carl. I snapped out of that shit and realized what i become. I was sick of looking like the black dude from “Happy Days.” I fought back the only way I could-I grew out my hair…..like the fucking hippie that i try SO HARD pretend im not.

Now not to feel it but i’ll tell you what your must CERTAINLY have guessed by now. I’M A SISTER AND IM SENSITIVE ABOUT MY FUCKING HAIR. I could write you a slave narrative about it but i’ll go ahead and spare you the bullshit and say it like this-hair is taboo to me because growing up my mom REFUSED to let me have a fro because she saw a white girl at school touching it and FREAKED, she made me cut it that day. This clued me in that alongside the taboo of seeming “unkempt” in general there was the futher variable of how race takes part in it….examples i’ve noticed:

1. Did you see “Good Hair”? That part where the three sisters basically agree that an afro doesn’t look “professional”? I HATE THAT PART :( Dude. Fuck that.

2. I live in the Bay Area. Part utopia part breeding ground for the Liberal Honky Menace AS WE KNOW IT. These bitches are TOO OPEN. Ive talked with 4 other people with fros (3 black 1 jewish [ps jewish fro= "jfro"]) and agree in our ponderance of WTF?!?!?!?!? People you don’t know asking to touch your hair OR JUST TOUCHING IT!!! THIS IS NOT RACIAL BELLY ACHING. Let some white dude have hair down to his ass NO ONE but NO ONE goes up to him and is all like “AWWWW KOOL! CAN I TOUCH YOUR HAIR?!?!?!?” Dude. Fuck that.

3. I almost KILLED that pasty German indie-rocker! HE SUCKED and had the NERVE to say (in a tone that implied that he was being REALLY HELPFUL) “I like you better with SHORT hair why don’t you like, comb it or something?” It took all my courage not to a.) cry and b.) slap that bitch. I wanted to explain to him that i don’t drink water, eat vegetables, monitor my drinking, or even brush my teeth some days because i know the truth about life-that is, its perfectly fine to look like hell some days. Like WHATTHEFUCKEVER, ya’know? Its like when a lily calls you “ashy.” Dude. Fuck that. Remember when they didn’t know what that word meant? Now i have to carry lotion (AGAINST MY WILL) because as a black man the world wants me all oiled up and glistening, when of course, “ashy” is natural.

4. I was on Adam4Adam indulging in my Wendsday night ritual of sexually harrassing teens in East Oakland when i heard that little ringing noise and the red “NEW MALE” sign flashing on my inbox. A gentleman caller! But wait. This wasn’t a gentleman caller. This was a bitch! “YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR PICTURES” (they were from 6 months ago when i had a fade) “I SEEN YOU WITH YOU UGLY GLASSES AND YOUR NAPPY ASS HAIR” O H H E L L N O. It was the sheer absurdity of the fact that a dick pic was talking shit to me. That HUGE DICK was a HUGE DICK. My retort….

“You listen to me you little teenage bug-chaser with no future. Don’t fuck with me-I’m horny. And lonely. And grown! While your on here turning into a statistic why don’t you go to school, take an Intro to African-American studies and learn why we aren’t supposed to use TOTALLY NIGGERISH (and antiquated) terms like “nappy”- if you’d had bothered to Wiki it, you would’ve learned that the term is “Afro-Textured”.
Fuck your parents for having you,
Brontez”

(I thought of all the dead 60′s Black radicals and how they would turn over in their collective grave if they knew how this younger generation was still being taught to hate their hair-and if they knew how many white guys i had let fuck me. No, seriously, like SOOOO MANY….i wept for them)

Now at the end of the day i wasn’t growing my hair for some half baked attempt at some faux-Contemporary Black Power statement. I was getting older and losing my hair and this may be my last chance to have it ever again. Early mid-life crisis? Whatever. I mean the shit was turning grey and the clock was TICKING with nothing to lose i decided my shit will STAY nappy. I’m not cutting it until its six inches longer. FUCK THE WORLD. The revolution will not be cut short.

love,
brontez

Obama Budget for HIV/AIDS Show Increases; Republicans Plan Cuts

Today the White House Office on National AIDS Policy hosted a conference call on the Administration’s budget request-what’s in it for people living with HIV and/or for the LGBT community. While we’ve heard in the press that the new budget includes cuts in most social spending domestically, there is actually increased funding in most HIV-related programs. You can read what they’re proposing for HIV/AIDS online.

But one point of interest for me is the $940 million for AIDS drug assistance programs (ADAP), an increase of $80 million above 2010 levels to support access to life saving HIV-related medications for approximately 13,000 additional people living with HIV/AIDS.This is particularly important as there are now 6000+ people on waiting lists around the country whom states have dropped from ADAP rolls, in an effort to save $$ from their dwindling coffers.

“We’re getting through a tough couple years until we get to the Affordable Health Care Act, but we’ve really stepped up our efforts to ensure HIV treatment until the provisions in the act take hold in 2014,” said Jeff Crowley, Director of Office of National AIDS Policy.

Health Care Reform would provided more opportunities for people with HIV/AIDS to have health insurance, mostly due to ending pre-exisiting condition bans by private insurers, and by making Medicaid more accessible by raising the income requirements.

None of this will happen of course, if the Republicans have their way with the budget. According to AmFAR, here’s the GOP’s proposed HIV/AIDS cuts announced late last year:

Domestic:

  • Domestic HIV/AIDS discretionary spending will be cut by 6.5% (from $7.58 billion to $7.09 billion)
  • Prevention: reverting to FY2008 spending levels for HIV prevention at the CDC will reduce funding from $799 million to $732 million—an 8.3% cut
  • Treatment: more than 4,300 people will need to be removed from the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) program—adding to the more than 4,000 people already waiting to be enrolled—putting their access to lifesaving treatment in jeopardy
  • Research: the proposed cuts will slash AIDS research funding at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) by 8%, from $3.18 billion to $2.93 billion, forcing the NIH to make serious reductions in current research efforts while also curbing new ones

Global:

  • Global HIV/AIDS discretionary programs will be cut by 13.1% (from $6.74 billion to $5.86 billion)
  • Treatment: despite the success of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), more than 9 million people in low- and middle-income countries need HIV/AIDS treatment but do not have access to it; a return to FY2008 funding levels will reduce bilateral HIV/AIDS investments by 12.4%, from $5.74 billion to $5.03 billion and could result in a need to remove people who are already receiving treatment
  • Pediatric and orphan services: as of September 2009, 3.6 million vulnerable children were receiving HIV-related care and support; a return to FY2008 funding will require serious cutbacks in services to children

The question is, how much are the Dems willing to fight for HIV/AIDS prevention, research and treatment? How much are we willing to fight to keep these things funded?

Herman Cain: Black Conservative to Watch Out For

Many people on the left think the Right is a joke. Of course they make absurd claims, and the kind of race and red-baiting they do is outrageous. While I think people like John Stewart do a good job of poking at the ridiculousness of the arguments, I think shows like that help people trivialize what is really dangerous about the current state of American politics (this is not to say that it has ever been better, or less harmful to certain kinds of people. I am merely calling attention to the current moment, and not hearkening to a good ole days of ethical politics.).

Anyhow, meet Black conservative Herman Cain. If you’re unfamiliar, he’s been around for a long time. In fact, some people suggest it was Cain, and not the “Harry & Louise” ads, that de-railed the Clinton health reform plan in the early 1990′s. He spoke at the much touted CPAC conference this weekend, and I want to post his speech in its entirety. He’s apparently launched an exploratory committee to see if a presidential run in 2012 is feasible.

He’s quite engaging as a speaker, has really great rhetorical style, and is folksy-he sort of reminds me of a right-wing George Jefferson. His explanation of the what the “Founding Fathers” meant in regards to slaves is really dangerous rhetoric that will likely be picked up and used (he ignores the reality that Blacks were not people or “men” created equal, we were the property.) Pay attention. He may become a much larger public figure than he already is.

Come On, People!: SC State Senator Robert Ford

Remember that horrible Bill Cosby book “Come On, People?” Well I am gonna pay more attention on this here blog to the racial uplift bullshit that dominates Black politics. I came across this story about South Carolina State Senator Robert Ford, who yesterday said that increasing penalties for undocumented (Latino) immigrants would hurt the economy because they work harder than Blacks. From Associated Press:

“We need these workers here. A lot of people aren’t going to do certain type of work in this country,” said Ford, D-Charleston. “The brothers are going to find ways to take a break. Ever since this country was built, we’ve had somebody do the work for us.”

He recalled to senators that four workers in the country illegally showed up on his lawn and finished mowing, edging and other work in 30 minutes that would take others much longer, and only wanted $10 for the job. He went on to say he recommended the workers to his neighbors, and one local lawn care businessman lost work — a story one senator remarked was hurting, not helping, his case….

…”Black guys and white guys are going to get out there and do the hard work? No. I’m for America, and America’s a country of immigrants,” Ford said later when reached on his cell phone. “Everybody in America finds ways to take a break.”

I think he added this piece about white people after the fact-to make it not seem as a singular attack on Blacks. But while it’s pointless to even try to refute his stupid claim, I will say that I think people working 2-3 jobs, 60-70 hours a week, or working for less than liveable wages is not honorable-it’s exploitation by capitalists, and it can mean a commitment to capitalist notions of “productive citizens” that people of color, immigrant or not, can also help advance-as in the case of Senator Ford. I am not mad at people, Black or otherwise, who refuse to work in such a fashion, or refuse to participate in the economy in that way. And because this perception of Black people as more lazy than other people exists, and is pretty ubiquitous in our society, I would argue that that actually prevents Black people from getting jobs in the first place!

Ford’s legislative record is littered with several racial uplift-type bills including outlawing profantiy, sagging pants, and keeping music from children deemed “profane.”

In keeping with the politics of respectability, the Senator has publicly supported civil unions for LGBT people, despite the SC state ban on anything that looks like marriage for same sex couples. Ford, incidentally, is a lifelong bachelor (Wikipedia’s words. Not mine.).
