YAY!!! Starbucks Closing 600 Stores

2 Jul

OK. Let me say first that I am sad about the 12,000 people may lose their jobs. From what I have heard, they weren’t a bad company to work for, and the benefits weren’t half bad.

Whew!

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, HOORAY!!!! I am so glad that Starbucks is closing 600 stores. And they can start with the 599 located in NYC as far as I’m concerned(It seems as though California and Florida will be the lucky states). There are several corners in Manhattan where you can stand, and with a slight turn of the head, see a Starbucks in every direction you turn. That’s not a joke.

They’ve taken over the planet, and they’re coffee is not even that great-and who the hell needs it at $4 a cup. So I feel no pity for them, and I blame them, Barnes and Noble and every fucking bank branch on every street corner-except in Black and Latino neighborhoods where we can only hope for a check cashing place-for driving small merchants out of business.

A few years ago, a Star_ucks opened on Broadway between 138th and 139th in a little commercial strip that also contained a Mickey D’s, an HSBC branch and a doctor’s office upstairs. Two blocks east on Amsterdam and 140th, a locally owned coffee shop opened around the same time. Both offered a variety of coffees, pastries, seating and a comfortable ambience. I’m happy to say, the Star_ucks closed within a year, while the local place is still there.

Lay off the black neighborhoods. And there is more than a check cashing place, thank-you very much, there’s also sure to be a liquor store and chicken joint too.

But I agree, I couldn’t be happier. I’d personally given up on Starsbucks not just because of their expensive-ass coffee … but their sometimes snootty staffers.

I always wanted to say, “Calm down, Puffy, you work in a coffee shop!!”
