Marsha Ambrosius: From Floetry Songstress to Gangsta Girl?
17 Jul
Searching the internet for news on the upcoming solo album from former Floetry singer Marsha Ambrosius, I came across a free downloadable mixtape her label, Dr. Dre’s Aftermath, produced as a way to do an underground promotion of her in anticipation of the release of the full recording. The mixtape is called Neo-Soul Is Dead, released in November 2007, and much of the disc is retread of famous Dr. Dre beats, mostly from The Chronic.
It’s fine to declare Neo-Soul to be dead, Erykah Badu did that about 5 years ago. But it’s quite another thing to all of a sudden become this gangstress singing to the beat of Dre’s “Bitches Ain’t Shit” about how “all you bitches don’t mean shit to me” when you were giving us some of the most beautful R & B love songs recorded in this generation! You would hardly recognize the vocalist from “It’s Getting Late” and “Like A Bird” with songs like “Grind You Up” and “You’s a Beeyatch!!!”
I’m all for artists growing in new directions musically-but this kind of 180 is just too much. Badu’s new recording is a stark departure from her previous work, but she’s not talking about fightin’ “bitches” and actin like she’s a Crip all of a sudden. I am not sure if I want to hear the full recording when it drops later this year.
I can live if neo-soul is dead, but I hope integrity isn’t.

Well, either you have integrity or you don’t … and either your poetry flows or it doesn’t.
Yeah, so… I hear what you are saying… however, my intent was to mock the stereotypical view point of those so surprised that I would collaborate with Dr.Dre… I thoroughly enjoyed doing it… I love music… I allowed myself the freedom of not having to be boxed in as mix tapes are just what they are… MIX TAPES!!! You can do whatever, and I did!!!! with all of that said…. expect the unexpected, believe in what you really are, pretending is hard to do, we’re all stars I make music that everyone will make babies to, break up with, make up with, live life all luv…
To add to my 1st comment… I was the Songstress formerly of Floetry as you know it… all luv…
Thanks for providing some context, Marsha.
And the people wanna know when the new CD will drop?
I have another mix tape dropping soon… mixing the album as we speak… it drops late this year or early next year… the business is the business so I wanna drop when its right all luv…
Hey what happen to you and Natalie? You both made an excellent team. Wendy the gossip Williams said you both were gay. Why is it if a breaks up occurs they must have been involved. Do you think that you and Natalie will get back together because you both have great chemistry!
I didn’t talk to Wendy… I know Nat did and she cleared up gay rumors stating that it was her that had been or is involved with women… We did make an excellent team when it made an excellent team… some things aren’t forever and not for everybody… I understood the gay rumors… truthfully, my experience as far as press and public knowledge in the US lean towards homo-sexuailty early, especially when its only women involved… I mean, being that we weren’t in any way involved like that, press can kinda get on your nerves, but hey… whatever keeps em talkin… I can’t say Nat and I will ever collaborate again… but I can’t say we won’t either… I know I’m 31yrs old with 31yr old things to deal with for myself… I’m str8 as narrow 100% (with the exception of my future husband wanting to get down with an organized threesome) lol its all luv and music…
I was just wondering if you and Natalie still talk? Or is it an estranged friendship? You two were good together, while it lasted.
Not really sure if you’re checking up on this, at this point…but, I just downloaded “Yours Truly”, and I must say that-contrary to the folks that seem to feel that you doing the mixtape this is this or that-I think it’s a great marketing situation for your future endeavors; and, I only wish you and your ex-partner nothing BUT love, for all of the good lovin’ that you ladies afforded me, with your first, two releases*lol*!
I am a humongous fan of “Start…Finish”, presently…that thing is gonna mess around, and get somebody IMPREGNATED, someday soon(cough, cough*lmao*!).
Respect due, from an artist of a different medium (I dabble in literature, love…as well as, the visual arts, via pencil/pen/paint); and, I just want to say that I pray all ends well with your new solo shit, sexy songbird.
You are my favorite female vocalist bar NONE(and, that’s some select company that you keep, in my eye…Anita…Patti…Lalah…I STILL love your voice, more).
Shine ON, sweet pea …
Sincerely Yours,
The Bastard
