Africans Debate LGBT Rights on BBC Special

March 28, 2011

Despite the portaits of Africans as incapable of anything but being horrendously violent when it comes to queer people, the BBC hosted this townhall meeting on whether “homosexuality” is African or not. This conversation looks no different from the argument among a range of different veiwpoints in the US or elsewhere (Thanks La Marr Jurrelle for the hook-up!). Check it out:

  1. Derek Stewart says:

Wow. African views on homosexuality belong in the same category as African beliefs on female circumcision, the place of women, witchcraft, the treatment of albino’s, slavery, etc. Regardless of their genesis they are belief systems that will continue to keep African’s mired in poverty and ignorance. You cannot build a modern society predicated on an outdated cultural beliefs better suited for ancient times.

  2. It is possible to be African and Gay and proud of that fact! The fact that there was an African Boat in the 2010 Amsterdam Gay pride proves that in this day and age, we are no longer content to “blend in” but we are demanding our Natural and inalienable human rights to be whom we choose and be with whoever we love. We are African, we are queer and no amount of discrimination will change that fact! I am proud to support the African Gay Youth Foundation! Amandla!
